I go to the dermatology side of this practice and I cannot say enough good about them. They are always so thorough and careful, making sure they miss nothing. As a 4 time cancer survivor that is extremely important to me. They are also taking extra precautions due to the covid crisis. Many places say they are but Johns Creek Dermatology definitely is. If you need a trusted dermatologist that has your best interests at heart, then I suggest Dr. Timani and her PA, Megan Tracy.
PATIENT REVIEWS
It’s not always easy to find dermatologic care designed with richly pigmented skin in mind. Skin of color—whether African American, Hispanic, Asian Middle Eastern, or multiracial—has unique characteristics that influence how certain conditions appear and how treatments respond.

At Johns Creek Dermatology, we specialize in medical and cosmetic dermatology that respects differences. Our board-certified providers offer personalized, research-backed care that considers your skin tone, texture, and overall skin health. From pigmentation concerns to scalp conditions, we tailor every treatment to ensure it’s both safe and effective for you.
What Makes Skin of Color Unique and Why That Matters
Every skin tone has its own biological characteristics. Melanin-rich skin, in particular, requires careful attention during treatment. For example:
• Increased melanin means more natural UV protection, but also a higher chance of dark spots (PIH) or discoloration after irritation
• Thicker epidermis may impact how topical treatments are absorbed
• Higher fibroblast activity can increase the likelihood of raised scars or keloids
• Sebum production may be higher in some patients, contributing to oily skin or acne We take these traits into account when creating your treatment plan—so that your skin receives the respect and care it deserves.
Common Skin Conditions in Skin of Color Acne & Discoloration
In skin of color, breakouts are often followed by visible dark spots. Our treatments focus on both managing acne and helping promote an even skin tone using ingredients like retinoids, azelaic acid, and niacinamide.
Eczema
Instead of red patches, eczema may appear as dark brown, gray, or purple areas. Our care plans emphasize gentle hydration, barrier repair, and safe steroid use to avoid unwanted pigment changes.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis can be harder to spot in darker skin. We use clinical expertise to ensure accurate diagnosis and adjust therapies like phototherapy and topicals to minimize risks of lightening or darkening the skin.
Hyperpigmentation & Melasma
We offer personalized regimens for melasma and uneven skin tone that focus on sun protection, topical lightening agents, and when appropriate, low-risk cosmetic procedures designed for darker skin.
Keloids & Scarring
For patients prone to thickened scars, we provide options like corticosteroid injections, laser therapy, or cryotherapy—always tailored to your skin’s needs.
Vitiligo & Pigment Loss
Loss of pigment can appear more prominent in deeper skin tones. We provide options like narrowband UVB therapy, topical treatments, and in some cases, micropigmentation.
Fungal Infections
Conditions like tinea versicolor can look different in pigmented skin. We offer both topical and oral antifungal treatments based on the extent and location of the issue.
Hair & Scalp Health in Diverse Hair Types
Textured hair and tightly coiled curls require a specialized approach. We treat:
• Traction alopecia
• Cicatricial alopecia
• Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA)
Our care includes topical and injectable treatments, lifestyle guidance, and access to specialized hair restoration services through our trusted partners. Our goal is to support both hair health and confidence with personalized, research-based solutions.

Safe, Effective Skin Care Procedures
Chemical Peels
Mild peels using glycolic, salicylic, or mandelic acid can help with discoloration and texture when selected and applied carefully.
Microneedling
This is a well-tolerated option for addressing acne scars and pigmentation in skin of color, with minimal downtime and low risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Laser Treatments Devices
such as the Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) and fractional lasers are carefully selected and calibrated to suit darker skin tones, helping reduce the risk of pigment changes while delivering effective results.
