We had a great experience with a doctor who really cares. She was very attentive to my daughters’ concerns. She also was very concerned about the effects my daughter’s acne is having on her self-esteem. She is vigilant and promised my daughter to put up a good fight to resolve the issue. If you have a teen with skin troubles, I highly recommend Johns Creek Dermatology!!!
PATIENT REVIEWS
Acne is not just a skin condition. For teenagers, it can define how they feel walking into school every morning. For adults, it raises questions that feel embarrassing to say out loud: why is this still happening? For parents watching their child struggle, it is painful to know they are hurting and not know how to help.
At Johns Creek Dermatology, we do not hand you a prescription and send you on your way. We take time to understand what is actually driving your acne, whether that is hormones, genetics, inflammation, or something else entirely. Then we build a plan around your skin, your age, your lifestyle, and your goals. For active breakouts and for the scars they leave behind.
Acne Care That Goes Beyond Breakouts
Most acne patients have been through the cycle. A product works for a while, then stops. A prescription clears things up, then the acne comes back. An aesthetician improves texture but cannot touch what is driving the breakouts underneath.
At Johns Creek Dermatology, we treat acne on two levels: the underlying condition causing your skin to break out, and the visible effects it has left on your skin. You do not have to choose between clearing your skin and repairing it. We address both, with physician-led care designed to evolve as your skin does.
Our Dual Approach to Acne Care: Medical and Cosmetic
Treating acne well means treating it completely. We address the root cause and continue through to skin restoration, because clearing breakouts is only half the work.
Medical Treatment
Your personalized plan is built around what is actually causing your acne. It may include prescription topicals to reduce inflammation and regulate skin cell turnover, oral medications for moderate to severe cases, steroid injections for large or painful cysts, professional extractions to safely clear congestion and reduce scarring risk, and phototherapy when appropriate. Every decision is physician-led and adjusted over time as your skin responds.
Cosmetic Restoration
Once active acne is under control, we shift focus to what it has left behind. Depending on your scar type, skin tone, and goals, your plan may include microneedling to stimulate collagen and smooth scar texture, chemical peels for post-inflammatory pigmentation and surface renewal, HydraFacial to deeply cleanse and restore barrier health, scar subcision to release tethered scars, microdermabrasion for gentle resurfacing, and dermal fillers for volume loss in deeper scars. Every cosmetic treatment is selected for your specific skin, including sensitive and richly pigmented skin tones.
It Starts With an Accurate Diagnosis
We do not treat acne by assumption. Before recommending anything, we take time to understand what is actually driving your skin. We use advanced diagnostic tools when needed, including dermatoscopy for close visualization of skin changes, Wood's lamp to identify pigmentation shifts or underlying infections, skin cultures to rule out bacterial or fungal involvement, and biopsy for stubborn or unusual presentations. The right treatment begins with the right diagnosis.
Acne Does Not Look The Same for Everyone
We see patients at every stage of life and with every type of acne. The presentations below are the most common we treat, but if yours looks different, that does not mean we cannot help. Every patient starts with a full evaluation.
Teenage Acne
Acne during adolescence is driven by hormonal shifts that are completely normal but can cause significant emotional distress. We take teenage acne seriously because early, appropriate treatment is the most effective way to prevent the scarring that becomes much harder to treat later. We also work with parents to build a realistic, sustainable routine their teenager can actually follow.
Adult and Hormonal Acne
Adult acne, particularly in women, is often hormonal and cyclical. It tends to concentrate along the jawline, chin, and neck, and it rarely responds well to the same treatments used for teenage acne. We evaluate the full picture, including possible internal contributors, before recommending a course of care.
Cystic and Severe Acne
Deep, painful cysts under the skin are the most likely type of acne to cause permanent scarring if left untreated or undertreated. We do not manage cystic acne conservatively when a more targeted approach is appropriate. Patients with severe acne receive a thorough evaluation to explore all available medical options.
Persistent and Treatment-Resistant Acne
If you have been treated for acne before without lasting results, you are not out of options. You may not have had the right diagnosis yet. We go deeper to understand what previous treatments missed and why, then build a plan accordingly.
Acne Scarring
Acne scars are not a cosmetic afterthought. They are a medical outcome that deserves the same clinical attention as active breakouts. We treat all scar types, including post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, rolling scars, boxcar scars, and icepick scars, with treatments matched to your scar type, skin tone, and healing capacity.
What Makes Our Acne Care Different
Physician-Led, Every Visit
Your care is directed by a board-certified dermatologist, not a general practitioner or aesthetician. For a condition as complex and emotionally significant as acne, that distinction matters at every appointment.
Medical and Cosmetic Under One Roof
Most practices treat active acne or treat acne scars. We do both, with the same physician continuity from your first breakout to your final scar treatment. You do not start over with a new provider when your skin is ready for the next phase of care.
Family-Owned Practice
We are not a high-volume chain. We take time with each patient, whether that patient is a teenager coming in for the first time or an adult who has been managing acne for years. Your relationship with our practice is built over time, not rushed through a 10-minute appointment.
Serving Johns Creek and North Atlanta
Our practice is conveniently located for patients across North Atlanta, including Suwanee, Alpharetta, Duluth, Cumming, and surrounding communities, who are looking for expert dermatologic acne care close to home.
Safe for All Skin Types and Ages
We treat acne in teenagers, adults, and older patients, and we have specific experience managing acne and acne scarring across all skin tones, including skin of color, where the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation requires particular care and precision.
Questions Patients Ask Us About Acne
At what age should my teenager see a dermatologist for acne? As soon as acne is causing emotional distress, leaving marks, or not responding to gentle over-the-counter care. Early intervention is the most effective way to prevent permanent scarring, and there is no benefit to waiting.
Is adult acne different from teenage acne? Yes, significantly. Adult acne, particularly in women, is often driven by hormonal fluctuations and does not respond to the same treatments used for adolescent acne. It requires a different diagnostic approach and a different treatment plan.
Can acne scars be treated? Many types of acne scarring can be significantly improved with the right treatment. The appropriate approach depends on your scar type, skin tone, and how your skin heals. We evaluate all of these before recommending anything.
How long does acne treatment take to work? Most patients begin to see meaningful improvement within 8 to 12 weeks of starting a physician-led treatment plan. Acne scarring treatments require more time and typically a series of sessions. We set realistic expectations at your first appointment so you always know what to expect and when.
What if I have tried prescriptions before and they stopped working? This is one of the most common situations we see. It does not mean you are out of options. It often means the underlying driver of your acne was not fully identified or the treatment was not adjusted as your skin changed. We start with a fresh evaluation and build from there.
Do you treat acne in patients with skin of color? Yes. Acne in darker skin tones carries a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can be as distressing as the acne itself. We select treatments specifically matched to your skin tone to minimize that risk and address any existing pigmentation alongside your acne.
