The term “skin rejuvenation” has become a quite popular phrase recently, as more and more people are becoming aware of the unwelcome changes associated with aging skin. These include lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation and uneven skin tone, facial creases, loss of volume, and overall loss of collagen.  Rejuvenation describes treatments and practices that we offer at Johns Creek Dermatology in Johns Creek, GA which are intended to address these signs of aging and result in a more youthful appearance.  And we have great success implementing them. But Millenials are asking, can we take actions that can prevent the skin from aging, or begin rejuvenating skin before significant appearance related changes evolve?

The answer is a resounding YES! It makes sense that it is easier and more effective to take steps to prevent appearance-related changes that are associated with age, than to treat them once they have been established on your face.  This approach is referred to as “prejuvenation”.  Based on a thorough analysis of your age, lifestyle, skin condition, medical health, and aesthetic goals, Dr. Shereen Timani will design a customized program that may include one or more of these popular techniques to help deter the impacts of aging from occurring.

Sun Protection

This is perhaps the baseline of prejuvenation anti-aging measures. Regular use of sunscreens from an early age helps protect skin from cancer causing damage, it also helps deter the formation of fine wrinkles, brown spots and pigmentation irregularities, and an overall loss of collagen. A protection level of 30 SPF is recommended, as well as broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) features.

Skin Care

Starting in the teenage years, a simple daily routine using quality products designed for your skin type and environmental factors is important to keep skin moisturized, clear, and well nourished. The majority of anti-aging products focus on ingredients with anti-oxidant properties and products, such as retinoids, that stimulate collagen formation. For those with significant sun exposure, retinoids also alter the way skin grows, diminishing photodamage. Facial treatments such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion exfoliate the skin and remove superficial imperfections.

Facial Expression Movement Inhibitors

Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators which are injected into areas where repetitive muscle movement has resulted in the development of wrinkles. It softens the appearance of existing horizontal forehead creases, vertical frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet. Regular treatments beginning in the late 20’s to early 30’s is a key prejuvenation step, as it deters progression to deeper, more fixed and less treatable lines over time.

Soft Tissue Fillers

Volume loss is a major sign of aging, resulting in wrinkles, crepey, loose, and sagging skin, and formation of hollow areas. These changes can begin to occur as early as the 30’s. Fillers have been used to correct changes in facial contours where visible volume loss has already occurred and are known to help stimulate the production of your own collagen. As a “prejuvenation” measure, we can keep abreast of age-related volume loss by gradually and incrementally supplementing the lost volume, while promoting collagen development.

Microneedling and PRP

The formation and maintenance of collagen is key to a youthful appearance. Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy. It uses the creation of micro-injuries to stimulate the skin to release a wave of healing proteins, which build new collagen.  Application of PRP into the open micro-channels maximizes the healing by using your own blood to amplify the healing proteins. Patients can benefit starting in their early thirties as the skin begins to show signs of early collagen depletion.

The Best Time to Start is Now

The best way to protect and prevent your skin from signs of aging is to start early with a “prejuvenation” program. From applying sunscreen at an early age to actively employing preventative measures in the late 20’s and early 30’s, many of the changes occurring to your skin as you age can be delayed or averted. Don’t let time hold you back from enjoying a natural youthful appearance later in life. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Timani today.
