Skin Cancer

We’re in this together.

Skin cancer can be very stressful but at Johns Creek Dermatology we make sure our patients leave the office feeling secure, confident, and cared for. To make things easier for patients, skin cancer is identified, diagnosed and treated in one place: Johns Creek Dermatology in Johns Creek North Atlanta. And most importantly we focus on close follow up to ensure patients remain cancer free so we can look back at this experience in the past together.

Our approach to skin cancers is very comprehensive with an emphasis on prevention. We regularly conduct full body skin cancer screenings with a systematic approach scanning each patient from head to toe. Full body screenings can be intimidating, but, we make the process pleasant and comfortable for our patients. At our practice we promise quick turn around with diagnostics and collaborate with a team of experts if a case is challenging. When skin cancers are diagnosed, the type and stage is discussed with the patient face to face at length.

Skin cancers are unique and there are many subtypes. Unlike internal cancers, skin cancers are visible and can be detected early. This is why it is important to monitor the skin for any changes in size, shape, color, and border. Treatment options vary according to the patient’s history, general health, the location of the cancer, size of the cancer, and many other variables.

There are subtypes of skin cancers. Non-melanoma skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Non-melanoma skin cancers are more common and are usually the result of excessive sun exposure. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer and it is the least likely to metastasize, however, if left untreated it can grow into deeper tissue. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer and it is rare, however, roughly around 30% metastasize. Melanoma is the least common type of skin cancer and will metastasize if it is left untreated. Melanoma can be fatal and it is very important to treat it early to prevent it from spreading to the lymph nodes. All skin cancers are treated according to stage and severity.

There are a surprising number of skin cancer treatment options available and we work with patients to make the best decision together. At Johns Creek Dermatology our expertise in dermatopathology, general surgery and Mohs surgery in Johns Creek North Atlanta provides skin cancer patients with the highest chance of being cured.
