Johns Creek Dermatology is excited to now offer Bellafill®, our newest dermal filler for long-lasting acne scar reduction! Active acne breakouts, which Dr. Timai routinely treats, is a condition which not only can affect your appearance but also can impact confidence. Yet once managed, living with the scars in the aftermath of acne can be even more devastating to your self-esteem. When acne scars confront you every time you glance in the mirror and you’re tired of trying to hide and cover them, Dr. Timani suggests you consider Bellafill®

Types of Acne Scars

Most acne scars are caused by persistent inflammatory acne, including nodular and cystic acne breakouts. When outbreaks overlap and affect the same area of skin, there is no opportunity for the skin to completely heal. The inflammation associated with severe acne prevents the body from mobilizing the cells and materials necessary for the normal healing process to repair the skin. When a deep break in the follicle wall occurs, infected material spills out into the dermis and destroys healthy skin tissue. Atrophic (depressed) scars form when the collagen required to build the scaffolding matrix for tissue repair is insufficient, resulting in a divot in the skin. These include:

  • Ice Pick Scars: Very deep holes in the skin that look like the skin has been punctured with a sharp object.
  • Boxcar Scars: Depressed holes in the skin which tend to be broader and boxier shaped than ice pick scars.
  • Rolling Scars: Rolling scars have smooth edges and look like tiny hills and valleys.

Everyone heals differently, so often more than one of these types of acne scars may be present. Bellafill® works equally well on men and women, as well as all skin tones.

Why Bellafill® is the Filler of Choice for Atrophic Acne Scars

Bellafill® is unlike any other filler. It is the first and only injectable filler that’s FDA approved to treat acne scars. This injectable filler consists of a collagen gel with PMMA microspheres. Bellafill® immediately adds volume below atrophic acne scars to lift them to the level of surrounding skin. The PMMA microspheres then provide a “scaffold” that supports the body’s own natural collagen production, replacing the collagen gel as it develops over time. Unlike most hyaluronic acid fillers, which often dissolve within a few months, Bellafill® creates a lasting improvement in your skin. It restores rather than just fills for natural-looking, enduring results. It is designed to reduce the appearance of acne scars for up to one year; however, results vary from patient to patient. There is an added benefit that many people don’t realize until after their Bellafill® treatment. Seeing acne scars fade is emotionally transformative, too.
