Botox® is a widely used muscle movement inhibitor designed to smooth lines and wrinkles associated with muscle movement, while still preserving natural facial expressions. It is used by Johns Creek Dermatology to decrease the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. We treat three main areas with Botox®: horizontal lines in the forehead; the frown line area between the eyebrows; and the area crow’s feet area adjacent to the eyes. You may choose one area to target, or all three at one time for maximum smoothing effect. Botox® injections may also be used in conjunction with dermal filler injections for maximum facial rejuvenation results.
To determine of Botox® is right for you, Dr. Timani at Johns Creek Dermatology will evaluate your skin, wrinkle characteristics and general health at your initial consultation. If you are in good physical and emotional health, are concerned about the lines and wrinkles around your eyes or on your forehead, and have realistic expectations as to the results, you may be a good candidate for Botox® .
You can anticipate that a Botox® treatment session will take up to 15 minutes. depending on the extent of the wrinkles to be treated, the number of injections administered, and the number of areas targeted. The area to be treated will first be cleaned with alcohol. The treatments are performed while you sit upright, and the procedure does not require anesthesia, although a topical anesthetic cream may be applied to reduce any tenderness. Dr. Timani uses a tiny needle to inject the Botox® into the muscles of the desired location. You may experience a stinging sensation for a few seconds, and possibly hear a “popping” sound. As well, there may be some immediate redness and mild swelling at the injection sites, which will disappear within a few hours. One of the benefits of Botox® is that there is no real downtown – you may resume most normal activities after treatment, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours.
Duration of Results
The results of Botox® injections are not immediately visible. Within about a week after treatment you will begin to notice a reduction in the ability to move the treated muscles. Within several weeks, the wrinkles in the treated areas should appear to soften, and movement in those areas diminished. If necessary, we will administer a touch up treatment to ensure results are symmetrical. The effects from Botox® generally will last anywhere between three and six months, during which time ability to move the treated muscles will gradually return. The effectiveness of the treatment varies from patient to patient depending on age, skin factors, muscle strength and general health, and in rare cases it is possible that there is minimal effect. Continued application of Botox® may increase the duration of the effects due to a cumulative effect.
The Most Common Side Effects
Botox® is considered a safe treatment for aesthetic enhancement. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, although rare, you may experience a side effect, which may include: redness and pain at the injection site; bruising; headache or flu-like symptoms; temporary muscle weakness or drooping of the upper eyelid muscles; or nausea. Potential for Botox® to spread beyond the treatment area is extremely rare.
