Glytone PeelDoes your skin look dull, tired, just not as vibrant as it used to? Are you in-between resurfacing treatments and just need a little brightening? Shereen Timani, M.D. at Johns Creek Dermatology in Johns Creek GA, offers the Glytone Peel, a glycolic acid peel, for a milder, yet extremely effective rejuvenation option. We proudly use only Glytone products, a large line of skincare products from Genesis Pharmaceutical for our glycolic acid peels.

What Does a Glytone Peel Do?

Glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane, is possibly the most prevalent alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) used for facial peels and is an effective choice with minimum side effects. The Glytone Peel sloughs away the upper layer of old and dead skin cells, revealing a new layer of skin within a few days. Dr. Timani typically uses a solution containing 20% and higher glycolic acid concentrations for her in-office peels. One of the major contributors responsible for the development of lines and wrinkles is aging and sun exposure, resulting in loss of collagen, a protein that helps give skin its structure. A benefit of a glycolic acid peel is its potential to stimulate the growth of collagen, which aids in producing smoother-textured and more vibrant-looking skin.  In addition, the peel removes the exterior barrier of dead skin cells, which allows your moisturizer and other topical skin care products to penetrate more deeply and enhance their effectiveness. A stronger acid concentration of the peel will penetrate the tissue at a deeper level, resulting in more refreshed looking results, although recovery time will be extended.

Treatment with Glycolic Acid

The treatment typically takes less than 15 minutes in the office. Dr. Timani will first thoroughly cleanse, then swipe the formulation on your face. Following the treatment, your skin will look slightly reddened and may be dry. Over the next few days, you may experience some slight peeling, depending on the concentration of the peel. Moisturizer will minimize these side effects.  Sunscreen is a must over the weeks following the treatment, as your newly revealed skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure.  Be sure to communicate to Dr. Timani if you are using Retin-A, acne medication and topical products containing salicylic acid, or other Retinoid-like medications as it can strengthen the effects of the peel or make your skin more sensitive.  Dr. Timani may recommend using a glycolic acid peel in conjunction with microdermabrasion, which also removes the upper layers of the skin in order to increase the effectiveness of the peel and uncover smoother, brighter looking skin while decreasing pore size and even reducing the impacts of acne.
